Abstract

The purpose of this study are (1) to analyze how the thinking process of students in solving problem solving questions on algebra, (2) to analyze how mistakes made by students in solving problem solving questions on algebra based on Jean Piaget's theory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques used are triangulation starting from giving test questions, conducting interviews and writing field notes. Sources of data from this study are students of class VIII SMP Islam Al-Azhar 30 Tasikmalaya who make mistakes in solving the problem solving questions on algebra. Data analysis used are data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The result of this research are that the students have procedural assimilation at the understanding stage of the problem, where students are able to mention all the information contained in the problem. Students experience conceptual accommodation at the stage of making plans, in which students make the mistake of turning information into algebraic form by creating a mathematical model and performing the sum calculations on unequal tribes. Students experience procedural accommodation at the stage of implementing the plan, in which learners make mistakes resulting from previous conceptual mistakes. Students do not do a look back to check the answers that have been obtained.
