Abstract

The objective of this study is to assess the mathematical communication skills of students based on Florence Littauer's personality types, specifically focusing on sanguine and melancholy types. The research adopts a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection involves personality type questionnaires (Florence Littauer), tests to evaluate mathematical communication abilities, and interviews. The instruments utilized include the Florence Littauer personality type questionnaire and a mathematical communication ability test. The study involves students from classes VIIA and VIID at SMP Negeri 16 Tasikmalaya. Selection of research subjects is based on a purposive technique, where three students, each representing the dominant personality types, were chosen for their ability to fulfill some or all of the indicators of mathematical communication ability. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, presentation, and verification. The study's findings indicate that students with melancholy personality types, specifically S2M and S20M, exhibit commendable mathematical communication skills. They demonstrate the ability to translate everyday events into mathematical ideas and symbols, comprehend information within problems, and effectively communicate mathematical ideas and relationships through writing, illustrations, and algebraic expressions. Moreover, they are adept at formulating conjectures and constructing arguments. S2M, for instance, displays the capability to generate mathematical questions to determine solutions to problems. S33S effectively articulates their understanding of known elements within a problem, and both S33S and S33S communicate ideas and mathematical relations clearly through writing and algebraic expressions.
